Statement
The third space, the "in-between", is the permanent position for displaced peoples to inhabit. Whether a forced migration or a voluntary one, the cultural imprints of childhood and youth are strong and permanent. They do not diminish with age but instead strengthen as the rashness of youth is replaced by the reluctance of maturity. The crossing of a border between two cultures is not a one-time occurrence, but persists in a suspension of time.
My pieces explore this state of limbo. Through the weaving process, time becomes evident in the slow progression of threads that each needs to be handled; warped, dyed, threaded, sleyed and shot across. The loose weave structure shows the ambivalence of the position "in-between". The little humans in its middle are obvious references to the large part of the world´s population that is up-rooted each year. My transition was voluntary, but still, after many years, I find myself unable to choose, unable to decide, stuck in the in-between.
I work on a 16-shaft computer aided loom. All the yarns are measured out and dyed before they are woven together. "Double ikat" and "warp and weft painting" give me the areas of solid color I want, as well as the mixed borders that I find exciting. They also provide me with the part of weaving I enjoy: throwing the shuttle from edge to edge.
